A Thoughtful Manager Helps A Worker Address His Heavy Drinking After A Broken Relationship

Barry dropped out of high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually found employment at a local truck assembly plant. For the last nine years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working person who infrequently calls off work due to sickness.

Around six months ago he started dating a woman named Carol. They appeared to get along real well right away and looked as if they had a lot of good times together.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This situation changed when Barry and Carol started seeing one another on a fairly usual basis. In fact, everything was going great until Carol called Barry one night about 2:30 AM and told him that she had to breakup and that she couldn't explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to her apartment and found out right away that she had already moved out. Barry took this exceptionally hard. If truth be told, he was stunned because they appeared to be getting along so well.

So what did Barry do? Instead of working through his sorrow and pain, he began getting drunk almost every night. It didn't take very long for his fellow employees and for his boss to see that Barry was coming to work late at least once per week and that he constantly called off sick. Not only this but some of the workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and stated that Barry often came to work with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.

Barry's manager heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Monday morning he called Barry into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his behavior, work performance, attendance, and in his sick time.

"Barry I am not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have seen more than a few of my friends and relatives experience some really terrible issues due to their abusive drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcoholism can do to a person."

"Why is this relevant? When people involve themselves in abusive and hazardous drinking, their drinking problems not only adversely affect the alcohol abuser, but they also make a negative impact on his or her neighbors, co-workers, family, friends, and relatives. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your abusive and excessive drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."

Barry respected his manager very much and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the very next day when he called and made an appointment with someone in the employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the pain in his heart about Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his fellow employees wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in a number of weeks and he actually felt some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
